HIVis caused by a virus that compromises the body’s immune system, making it unable to fight off certain infections. If untreated, HIV can become AIDS (the most advanced stage of HIV).  HIV/AIDS is spread through infected body fluids, such as blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, fluid from the vagina, and breast milk.  Pregnant women can also pass HIV/AIDS to their children, in utero.
