HPV

Human PapillomaVirus

is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in Canada. It can lead to cancer and skin lesions such as genital warts. There is no cure for HPV and while most people with healthy immune systems will eventually clear the symptoms from their bodies, they will be lifelong carriers of the infection.  It is estimated that 75% of sexually active people in Canada are carriers of HPV. You can reduce your risk of getting HPV by practising safer sex and getting vaccinated. There are three vaccines available to help prevent some types of HPV, including the ones that cause 70% of anal and genital cancers and 90% of anogenital warts.
